1.The short version

No account, free to listen, paid for by ads

कथा asks for no account, name, email or phone number. Stories are fetched from our server the first time you play them and are then kept on the phone. The app shows ads through Google AdMob, and it sends us anonymous counts — how often a piece is played, liked or downloaded, and how the app is used — so we know what to write next. None of that is tied to who you are.

2.What stays on your phone

  • Where you stopped in each piece, so a serial you are halfway through opens where you left it.
  • Which pieces you have finished, liked, disliked or saved.
  • What you listened to recently, for the shelf that offers to carry on.
  • Whether the next part should play on by itself, and which language the app is read in.
  • Every piece you have played, kept as an audio file in the app’s private folder so it plays without a network afterwards.

None of this is backed up by us, synced by us, or readable by us. It is deleted when the app is uninstalled. Downloaded pieces are kept in Application Support rather than a cache folder on purpose, so that the phone does not quietly delete a story on the night you meant to listen to it.

3.What the app sends to us

  • A request for the list of stories, and for each story’s audio the first time you play it.
  • When a piece is played, liked, disliked or downloaded: the piece and a random number made on your phone when the app was first opened, so one phone is counted once. It is not your phone number, name, email or advertising ID.
  • Anonymous usage counts — that the app was opened, how long a screen was open, and named taps such as “shared” — to our own server. Nothing you type is ever sent.

These go to our servers on Cloudflare. They are not sold, not shared with anyone and not used for advertising.

4.Advertising

The app shows ads from Google AdMob: a banner above the tabs, sometimes one full-screen ad before a story starts (never in the middle of one), and a video you can choose to watch to turn ads off for 24 hours. The app asks AdMob for non-personalised ads. AdMob itself collects the device’s advertising ID, IP address and ad interactions to serve and measure ads and prevent fraud; that is governed by Google’s policy at https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads. You can reset or delete the advertising ID in your phone’s settings.

5.Every permission the app holds, and why

  • Internet and network state — to fetch stories, send the counts above and load ads.
  • Foreground service and media playback — so a story keeps playing with the screen off, with the usual controls on the lock screen.
  • Wake lock — so the phone does not sleep in the middle of a piece.
  • Advertising ID — added by the AdMob SDK, for ads.

What it does not ask for

There is no camera, no microphone, no location, no contacts, no calendar and no access to your files or photos.

6.Payment

Nothing is sold in the app today. If a paid plan is added it will be bought through Google Play or the App Store, which handle the payment; we never see card or bank details.

7.Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and asks nothing of them. Some of the shelf — the hauntings in particular — is written for adults.

8.Removing what there is

Uninstalling the app removes everything it kept on the phone, including the random number used for counting. The counts already sent are not linked to any person, so there is nothing to find by name; write to us if you have a question about them.

9.Contact
